The Musical Universe of Naseer Shamma
2022 Arabic Music Days
Musical Performance Trio 0Unfortunately, due to travel and visa issues, Naseer Shamma could not come to Berlin and will not be able to perform tonight. Thankfully, ney virtuoso Hany Elbadry and percussionist Firat Fadhil, who were both heard earlier this week as part of the Arabic Music Days, and vocalist Khater Dawa have agreed to join the members of the Naseer Shamma Trio for this performance.
"We are in the places we dream about.” Imagination can cross seas and mountains, to be where it wants to be.
My dear friends, I feel great sadness today—not only because I am missing this festival and this performance, but also because this was to be the continuation of meetings, year after year, with all of you, which means a lot to me. We are celebrating the fifth anniversary of the opening of the Pierre Boulez Saal today. A few weeks ago, I was set to travel to Berlin, but just before I left, I tested positive for the coronavirus, and while I was in quarantine, my residence permit expired. I have tried all I could over the last few days to renew it, but it was not possible in time.
While I cannot be with you, I am delighted that alongside master musicians Aytaç Doğan and Carlos Piñana, who were set to perform with me, the magnificent ney player Hany Elbadry from Egypt and Iraqi percussionist Firat Fadhil—who are both part of this festival week—are joining the ensemble for tonight’s concert. As a special guest, we are welcoming Syrian singer Khater Dawa. I wish you a wonderful evening and hope to see you all again soon.
