In November 2019, Charles Lloyd made his highly acclaimed Pierre Boulez Saal debut, but two subsequent concerts planned for the 2020–21 season fell victim to the pandemic. Now the legendary jazz musician returns to Berlin for several days of events. The mini-festival opens with the big-screen premiere of Love Longing Loss. Created by Lloyd’s wife, painter and video artist Dorothy Darr, and commissioned by the Pierre Boulez Saal, this film portrait, first released in May 2021 for online streaming, documents the time spent in isolation at the couple’s home in Santa Barbara, California. In addition to presenting a number of solo performances, the film provides intimate insights into Charles Lloyd’s creative process. On the following days, the saxophonist will take the stage in two different trio formations: first, exploring connections between classical Indian music and jazz together with tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain and guitarist Marvin Sewell. Then, for the European debut of the Chapel Trio, named after Lloyd’s first joint performance with fellow greats Bill Frisell and Thomas Morgan at the Coates Chapel in San Antonio, Texas, in 2018.

Approximate running time: 1h 30m without intermission
