With the start of the new season, the Barenboim-Said Akademie launches a new edition of its Composers’ Club. In this series of seminars and conversations, some of today’s leading composers are invited to present their work. Each installment consists of a preparatory seminar for Akademie students, which is focused on a closer look at scores and aspects of the music, and a live talk with the composer that is open to the public.

On October 16, Stephan Winkler, Professor of Theory and Composition, welcomes composer and conductor Samy Moussa. The visit coincides with the performance of his orchestral work Elysium by the Staatskapelle Berlin, conducted by Christian Thielemann, on October 7 and 8.

Born in Montreal in 1984 and now based in Berlin, Samy Moussa studied with José Evangelista in his hometown and with Matthias Pintscher and Pascal Dusapin in Munich. His works have been performed by prestigious orchestras including the Vienna Philharmonic, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, London Symphony, and Los Angeles Philharmonic. He served as artist in residence with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and works closely with the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal. While his creative focus is on orchestral music, he has also written chamber music, two operas, and the oratorio Antigone, which received its world premiere at Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam earlier this year, conducted by Erik Nielsen.

Presented in English. Admission is free, registration is required.
