Jazz pianist Florian Weber and the Ensemble Modern, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, unite for the first time for their joint Pierre Boulez Saal debuts. The program, in which the ensemble members will participate in Weber’s improvisations, is inspired by Arnold Schoenberg’s “Coalition Chess,” a chess variant created by the composer—not only in terms of the rules guiding the interplay between soloist and ensemble, but also with reference to the spatial distribution of the musical forces within the hall’s unique architecture. The concert is supported by the Forberg Schneider Foundation, which honored Florian Weber with its 2020 Belmont Prize for Contemporary Music.
