Study on Beethoven (String Quartet No. 6)
Like his first five string quartets, Jörg Widmann created their follow-up companion works as a continuous “cycle with an uncertain outcome.” Titled “Studies on Beethoven,” these pieces engage in a creative and occasionally humorous dialogue with the quartets of Ludwig van Beethoven. Over the next two seasons, leading international ensembles will present these five works at the Pierre Boulez Saal. Following its 2018 performance of Widmann’s first quartet cycle, the British Heath Quartet opens the series, pairing Widmann with works by Haydn and Fanny Hensel.
