This year’s Quartet Week features six acclaimed ensembles who will explore a wide-ranging selection of works from the rich quartet repertoire in the Pierre Boulez Saal’s intimate setting. With celebrated masterpieces of the genre performed side by side with contemporary and recent pieces, the program reveals surprising connections and echoes across different styles and eras.

When Frederick William II acceded to the throne as King of Prussia in 1786, numerous composers put quill to paper to dedicate string quartets to this lover of the arts and amateur cellist—including Joseph Haydn, whose “Prussian” Quartet in B-flat major opens the concert of the Heath Quartet. As a stylistic counterpoint, the ensemble performs Erwin Schulhoff’s Five Pieces for String Quartet, written in 1923. Beethoven’s late C sharp–minor Quartet closes the program.

For scheduling reasons, this concert of the Heath Quartet unfortunately cannot take place. However, the concert on June 4 with Jörg Widmann will take place with a change of line-up and program.
