La Femme fendue for Voice and Violin
On a text by Lancelot Hamelin (German translation: Marcus Coelen)
First performed in September 2018 in Paris as part of the first Pierre Boulez Biennale, La Femme fendue (“The Split Woman”) by composer Benjamin Attahir and writer Lancelot Hamelin was conceived in response to Boulez’s Dialogue de l’ombre double: inspired by its dialogue between a clarinet and its own “shadow,” Attahir and Hamelin created a semi-staged dialogue-monologue between a woman—embodied by actress Martina Gedeck—and a man—represented by Renaud Capuçon’s violin—about the past, the unresolved, and the unspeakable, on different levels of communication.
