The South African–German Signum Quartett continues the two-season concert cycle dedicated to Jörg Widmann’s String Quartets Nos. 6 to 10. His second “Study on Beethoven,” which premiered in Cologne in 2020, is paired with Janáček’s equally personal Second Quartet, subtitled Intimate Letters and written in 1928 just a few months before the composer’s death. Haydn’s famous “Emperor” Quartet, which takes its name from a set of variations on the song “Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser,” opens the program.
