Artists

Clarinetist David Krakauer, pianist Kathleen Tagg, and video artist Jesse Gilbert return to the Pierre Boulez Saal with an extraordinary project: Breath & Hammer: The Ties That Bind Us is a unique audiovisual experience specially created for the hall’s 360-degree setting that was first seen here in 2019. Performing inside a transparent, hexagonal “room within a room” that doubles as a projection screen, Krakauer and Tagg present music of different genres and eras—from pieces by their friends, including composers such as Kinan Azmeh and John Zorn, to jazz and klezmer, to their own original compositions. While they play, they are surrounded by Gilberts interactive projections that blend live images of the duo with electronically created sound visualizations. The result is as immersive as it is strikingly original.

Approximate running time: 1h 20m without intermission
