The second Lied und Lyrik program focuses on two poets connected by a strange twist of fate: in September 1806, Friedrich Hölderlin was admitted to the Tübingen University Hospital on a diagnosis of “insanity” and “mania.” His treatment was entrusted to a 20-year-old medical student and amateur writer for whom the encounter proved to become a major influence on his future career—Justinus Kerner. Holger Falk and Julius Drake revisit the meeting of the two poets in music, with actors reading from their works. Schumann’s Kerner Songs are complemented by 20th-century Hölderlin settings by Eisler, Ullmann, and Josef Matthias Hauer.
