Chiaroscuro Quartet
Schubert, Mayer, van Beethoven
Musical Performance Quartet / Chamber Music 0At a time when women composers usually did not have the opportunity to present their works outside the sphere of domestic music-making, Emilie Mayer was pursuing her profession full-time. Born in 1812 and a student of Carl Loewe, she was among the most highly regarded female composers of her day but quickly fell into obscurity after her death. Stylistically, her works are influenced by the First Viennese School and early Romanticism, far removed from those of her contemporaries Liszt and Wagner. The Chiaroscuro Quartet pairs Mayer’s G-minor String Quartet, which was first published in 1864, with works by Beethoven and Schubert.
